News of the Battle of Trafalgar (October 21^st) and the death of Admiral Lord Nelson reached England in early November and provoked an extraordinary national outpouring of grief at the loss of a man who had come to personify British resistance to Napoleonic tyranny.

Nelson's body, carried on his flagship Victory, only reached England on December 4^th 1805 and plans were laid for a spectacular state funeral to honour him. Nelson's body lay in state in the Painted Hall at Greenwich Hospital from January 5^th to 8^th 1806 and thousands of mourners filed past to pay their last respects.
