News of the Battle of Trafalgar (October 21st) and the death of Admiral Lord Nelson reached England in early November and provoked an extraordinary national outpouring of grief at the loss of a man who had come to personify British resistance to Napoleonic tyranny.
Nelson's body, carried on his flagship Victory, only reached England on December 4th 1805 and plans were laid for a spectacular state funeral to honour him. Nelson's body lay in state in the Painted Hall at Greenwich Hospital from January 5th to 8th 1806 and thousands of mourners filed past to pay their last respects.
