Archduke Ferdinand of Styria, cousin of the Emperor Matthias and anticipated as his imperial successor, is recognised by the Bohemian Estates as heir to the Bohemian throne. However, he refuses to countenance the demands made by the Protestant Opposition party, led by Count Thurn, who calls on him to guarantee religious liberties.
