Duke Wolfgang William of Palatinate-Neuburg, a convert to Catholicism, seizes the duchy of Jülich. This act threatens to cause a general war in Germany, and restart a state of war between the Spanish Netherlands and the United Provinces. The crisis is resolved in November by the signing of the Treaty of Xanten, which divides Jülich-Berg-Cleves between Neuburg and Brandenburg.
