Gabor Bethlen becomes Prince of Transylvania as the Ottomans' favoured candidate. He replaces Gabriel Bathory, an ally of the Habsburg and dependant of Holy Roman Emperor Matthias, who had been murdered by two of his own army officers earlier in the year.
