The first attempt to lay a telegraph cable under the Atlantic
between Ireland and Newfoundland was completed in 1858 but the
cable failed. In 1866 two more cables were laid under the technical
supervision of Sir William Thomson, later Baron Kelvin, and this
time were successful.
