Matthias, King of Bohemia, succeeds as Holy Roman Emperor on the death of Rudolf II, although the formal election does not take place until June. He is to hold the post until his death in 1619, when the succession of his militantly Catholic relative Ferdinand II is to contribute to the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War.
