In what becomes known as 'The Flight of the Earls', Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and Hugh O'Donnell, Earl of Tyrconnel, flee from Ireland for Spain with their families and retainers. After their recent attempted rebellion, they now fear an imminent arrest unless they leave the country. Neither man ever returns to his native Ireland.
