James VI and I planned to unite the Presbyterian Church of Scotland with the Church of England. Aware that the General Assembly of Presbyterian ministers would attempt to block this scheme, he forbade them from meeting, but on 2nd July they met at Aberdeen in defiance of the King. As a result, the leaders were imprisoned and futures assembly were forbidden by the Council of Scotland.
