Henry IV of France obtains a divorce from Queen Margaret of Valois. He had originally pursued it in order to be able to marry his long-term mistress, Gabrielle d'Estrées, but she died in April 1599. He contracts a marriage to Marie de Medici the following year, with whom he has six children.
