Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, follows a badly-calculated strategy in Ireland, signing a truce with the Irish rebel Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone. On 24th September he leaves Ireland, contradicting Queen Elizabeth's commands. When he arrives at the court at Nonsuch, on 28th, he is arrested.
