Pope Sixtus V dies, having held papal office for the past five years. He is notable for the extent of his public works, including the completion of the dome of St Peter's basilica. However, this work was carried out at the expense of Roman antiquities, for which Sixtus had little appreciation: the Roman military monument known as Trajan's Column, now a landmark in itself, was used as a pedastal for a statue of St Peter. He was to be succeeded by Pope Urban VII, who only ruled for 13 days before his own death.
