The Catholic League, desperate to find a suitable candidate for the French throne to rival the Huguenot Henry of Navarre, proclaim the Cardinal of Bourbon (Henry's uncle) to be Charles X of France. However, this move is unsuccessful, since the Cardinal, an elderly man in his sixties, dies the following spring, on 10th May.
