Catherine de' Medici, Queen Mother of France, dies from lung infection. Her last surviving son, Henry III, was to die eight months later, assassinated by a fanatical Dominican friar. She had held sway over French politics for three decades, since the death of her husband Henry II in 1559, guiding and manipulating the decisions of her young and vulnerable sons Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III as they struggled to hold the crown of France.
