Henry, Duke of Guise, and his younger brother Louis, Cardinal of Guise, are both assassinated on the orders of King Henry III, and the Cardinal of Bourbon and the Duke of Joinville are arrested. These murders were carried out in defence of the King's weakening power: in October, a meeting of the French Estates-General had suggested that he should give up his crown to the Duke of Guise. As a result of these deaths, leadership of the Catholic League passes to the Duke of Mayenne.
