Following the death of Stephen Bathory the previous December, Sigismund III, son of John of Sweden, is elected King of Poland. However, another election sees Archduke Maximilian, brother of the Holy Roman Emperor, elected, which leads to a war of succession. Sigismund eventually gains the throne via victory at the Battle of Byczyna in January 1588, and rules Poland until his death in 1632.
