Sir Francis Drake undertakes a pre-emptive military mission to Spain, in what he calls 'singeing the King of Spain's beard'. He sacks the port of Cadiz, destroying 37 ships. The disruption this causes successfully delays the attempted Spanish invasion of England, preventing Philip II from sending an Armada until the following year.
