Abbas I accedes as Shah of Persia, aged 16. Placed on the throne in a context of political chaos by a militant group, he seized control for himself and became a notably successful king, introducing reforms and turning the tables on Persia's neighbours the Ottomans and Uzbeks, enabling the recapture of lost territory.
