Death of Stephen Bathory, King of Poland, dies aged 53. Archduke Maxmilian, brother of the Holy Roman Emperor, is initially elected his successor, but Sigismund III of Sweden also claims the throne, and eventually defeats Maximilian at the Battle of Byczyna in January 1588.
