The Surveyor-General of Ireland, Sir Valentine Browne, institutes a plantation of Munster by settlers from England to attempt to provide security against further rebellions. Confiscated lands were granted to English 'undertakers' who undertook to bring tenants from the home country to work the land and create a settled, defensible landscape and society.
