The English Parliament of 1586 to 1587 was notable for its Puritan agitation. Led by Anthony Cope, a group of Puritan MPs attempted to introduce a Presbyterian system (along the lines of the Church of Scotland) into the Church of England, as well as rewriting the Prayer Book. Both Anthony Cope and the trouble-making MP Peter Wentworth, who had supported Cope as part of his long-running campaign for free speech in Parliament, were arrested and sent to the Tower of London on the grounds that they had interfered with the Queen's ecclesiastical privilege.
