Henry III of France is forced to sign the Treaty of Nemours with the house of Guise. In the hope of gaining more control himself over the Catholic League, he submits to their demands, retracting all previous toleration towards Huguenots. This sparks what is known as the War of the Three Henries (the three being Henry Ill, Henry of Navarre and Henry of Guise) for the succession to the throne. Its measures against Protestants also cause the end of the Anglo-French alliance which had existed under the 1572 Treaty of Blois.
