The English Parliament meets and writes legislation that requires all Jesuits and seminary priests to leave the country within 40 days. The previous month, the arrest of Jesuit representative Father Creighton had revealed a conspiracy known as the Catholic Enterprise, collaborated in by Philip II of Spain, Governor of the Netherlands the Duke of Parma, and the Duke of Guise. Like so many previous plots, it sought to depose Elizabeth I and replace her on the throne with Mary Queen of Scots.
