Francis Throgmorton is executed for treason. He had spent the last three years on the Continent in communication with English Catholic exiles, and became an agent in an international Catholic conspiracy which was discovered in December 1583. With the aid of a joint French and Spanish invasion, this planned to depose Elizabeth I from the throne, replace her with a freed Mary Queen of Scots and restore papal authority in the country.
