François Duke of Anjou (formerly Duke of Alencon) dies at Chateau-Thiery. His death leaves King Henry III and his sister Marguerite as the only surviving children of Henry II, which makes the Protestant Henry of Navarre heir to the French throne. In opposition to Navarre's claim, the Duke of Guise gathers the Catholic factions of France into a militant Catholic League.
