Duke William V of Bavaria signs a concordat with Pope Gregory XIII, which gives him the right to tax church property, oversee its administration, and make some ecclesiastical appointments. In this way the papacy attempts to ensure the loyalty of secular powers who might otherwise be tempted by the greater ecclesiastical sovereignty to be gained from a Protestant church system.
