Francis Throgmorton, who had spent the last three years on the Continent in communication with English Catholic exiles, became an agent in an international Catholic conspiracy. With the aid of a joint French and Spanish invasion, this planned to depose Elizabeth I from the throne, replace her with a freed Mary Queen of Scots and restore papal authority in the country. In December 1583 this plot was discovered, and Throgmorton was arrested.
