François, Duke of Anjou, desiring more territorial power for himself in the southern Netherlands, attempted to occupy Antwerp, in what is known as the 'French Fury'. This city had already been sacked by the Spanish in 1576, and was not keen to experience another such disaster. Antwerp therefore laid a trap for the Duke, opening the city gates to his small French army but then shutting them in and bombarding them from rooftops, leaving few survivors. As a result of this failure and humiliation, Anjou left the Netherlands that summer, marking the end of his military career.
