In Scotland, James VI is effectively taken prisoner by the English Party, led by the Earls of Angus, Gowrie and Mar. In what is known as the Ruthven Raid, they seize the king while he is out hunting at Ruthven Castle, and force him to dismiss his favourites, the Earls of Arran and Lennox, to avenge the death of former Regent Morton. James remains in captivity until the following June, but on his release he moves to take fuller control of his government.
