Elizabeth I of England opens negotiations for a marriage with François Duke of Anjou. Puritans react to this news in horror, a feeling exemplified in John Stubbs' pamphlet on the subject, since Anjou was only a foreigner but a Roman Catholic, and so seemed to signal a return to the counter-reformation era of Mary I.
