At a meeting of the English Parliament, harsh legislation is passed against Roman Catholics in an 'Act against Reconciliation to Rome'. In order to oblige them to remain obedient to the Queen, fines of 100 marks are imposed for hearing Mass, and £20 per month for non-attendance at church, known as recusancy.
