The English Privy Council fails to give Elizabeth I the support she had expected in proceeding with a marriage treaty with the Duke of Anjou. Although they sign a preliminary treaty on 24th November, negotiations are then delayed due to Anjou's unpopularity in England, especially with Puritans, given his dalliances between Huguenot and Catholic parties in France.
