Esme Stuart, Seigneur d'Aubigny, a Catholic cousin of James VI, arrives at Leith and makes himself a royal favourite. He exerts a great deal of influence over the 13-year-old king, remaining dominant at court until his enemies capture James in the Ruthven Raid in 1582 and force the king to expel his former favourite.
