On the death of Ismail II, his elder brother Mohammed Khudabanda, who had previously been passed over in the succession because of his very poor eyesight, takes the role of Shah of Persia. His reign was marked by factional in-fighting, and in 1587 when a coup replaced him with his son Shah Abbas I.
