The States-General of the Netherlands proclaims François Duke of Anjou as Defender of Liberties, since their previous choice of leader, Archduke Matthias, has proved unsatisfactory. Anjou undertakes to lead an army of 2000 cavalry and 10 000 foot soldiers against the Spanish.
