In the Battle of the Three Kings, Sebastian, King of Portugal, invades Morocco, but is killed at Alcazar. The other two kings involved in the conflict - the deposed Sultan, al-Mutawakkil, and the new Sultan, Abd al-Malik - also die in the course of the fighting. Sebastian's great-uncle, Cardinal Henry, aged 67, becomes King of Portugal, but dies two years later without heirs.
