Juan de Escobedo, secretary to Don John of Austria, is assassinated. His murder takes place on the orders of Antonio Perez, secretary to Philip II of Spain. Philip was anxious about the ambitions of his half-brother Don John, who he justifiably suspected of planning an invasion of England for his own personal gain. In this context, Escobedo had been sent by Perez to spy on Don John, but in fact became loyal to his new master. As a result, Escobedo himself became a target of suspicion, and Perez arranged for three swordsmen to stab him to death when he came on a visit to Madrid.
