In Scotland, the long-standing regency that has been in place - although held by four different individuals - since the abdication of Mary Queen of Scots in 1567 finally comes to an end with the resignation of the Earl of Morton. Now James VI, aged 12, nominally takes over the government of Scotland, although he is to come under the sway of Esme Stewart, Earl of Lennox, for the next few years.
