Civil wars of religion continue in both France and the Netherlands. Don John of Austria, the new Governor of the Netherlands, enters Brussels. In France, Henry III's younger brother, the Duke of Anjou, takes the Huguenot stronghold of La Charité with great cruelty. The Duke of Mayenne lays siege to Brouage, near La Rochelle, which surrenders in August.
