The French Estates-General meet at Blois. The elections are controlled by Henri of Lorraine, Duke of Guise, producing an assembly opposed to the Huguenots. As a result, the policy of moderation recommended by Jean Bodin and the 'Politiques' party is defeated. Henry III's younger brother, the Duke of Anjou, who had defeceted to the Huguenot cause, returns to the court party.
