Stephen Bathory is elected King of Poland. Henry de Valois had been ruling the kingdom, but on the death of his elder brother the previous year, he had returned to France to take up the throne, and the Estates had deposed him in his absence. A minority faction vote to make Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II as King, but Stephen is preferred as a Polish candidate, and rules until his death in 1586.
