Henry III, who had been elected King of Poland the previous year, receives the news that he is also now King of France, since hte death of his brother Charles IX. He secretly leaves Poland for France, and en route meets the Emperor Maximilian II in Vienna, who advocates a policy of toleration towards the Huguenots. The Polish Assembly later deposes Henry, and replaces him with Anna Jagellion, daughter of a previous Polish king.
