The crew of the Golden Hind, captained by Francis Drake, become the first Britons to see the Pacific Ocean. On their circumnavigation of the globe, they had sailed down the Atlantic coast of South America, and reached the Pacific through the narrow Strait of Magellan, so named for the Portuguese sailor who had navigated it in 1520.
