On the death of Sigismund II, the last of the Jagellon dynasty which had ruled Poland since 1386, the Polish Estates declare the monarchy to be elective. They elect Henri de Valois as King in May 1573, but he rules for less than a year before leaving Poland to take the French throne after the death of his elder brother Charles IX.
