Charles IX of France makes a reconciliation with the Huguenot leader Admiral Coligny, who becomes for a short time very influential over the young king. It was in part Catherine de' Medici's fear and resentment at this unexpected alliance that fuelled the St Bartholemew's Day Massacre the following August.
