The Earl of Moray, Regent of Scotland, is assassinated by the a pro-Marian, James Hamilton at Linlithgow. His death sparks off civil war between the Marian faction, led by William Maitland of Lethington and Kirkcaldy in Edinburgh, and the Protestant Lords of the Congregation.
