Three Spanish treasure ships, which are carrying pay for the Duke of Alva's troops in the Netherlands, are driven by storms into Plymouth. There they are constrained and prevented from carrying on their journey, Elizabeth's contribution to the Protestant rebel cause. As a result of this, however, Philip II cuts off relations with England until 1574.
