Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, the second husband of Mary Queen of Scots, is murdered at Kirk o'Field, Edinburgh. What made this murder all the more shocking was that it was most likely carried on the orders of James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, who later became Mary's third husband. Her potential involvement in this murder led in part to her downfall, since the Scottish nobles rose in rebellion against her actions.
