James VI of Scotland is born. He is to succeed to the throne at the age of thirteen months, when his mother, Mary Queen of Scots, is forced to abdicate in his favour. Scotland is ruled over by various regents until James takes full control of government in 1581; he later becomes King of England as well when Elizabeth I dies without heirs in 1603.
