A treaty known as the Compromise of Breda is signed by Louis of Nassau, Philip de Marnix and Henry, Count of Brederode. This agreement is designed to organise the lesser nobility of the Netherlands into a resistance movement against religious persecution. This group, which comes to be nicknamed Les Gueux, presents a petition to the Regent in Brussels, calling for the withdrawal of the Inquisition and liberty of conscience.
