Mary Queen of Scots' new husband Lord Darnley, feeling that he should hold real power along with his title of 'King', grows jealous of his wife's confidential secretary, David Rizzio. A group of rebels led by Lord Ruthven bursts into Mary's chamber at Holyrood House and stabs him to death, probably on Darnley's orders.
